What is a domain name?

In short, a domain name is the address that identifies your business on the Internet. While in the past, the purpose of websites was mainly to promote physical stores on the Internet, now the situation is completely different and physical stores have become a place to promote online businesses. It can be said that nowadays more people prefer to shop or negotiate services online rather than offline.

Domains are the human-readable forms of internet addresses and are commonly used to find websites. For example, the domain <ipfabrika-new.sfcbg.website/> is used to find the website of IP Factory on https://www.ipfabrika.comThe domain also forms the basis of other methods or applications on the Internet, such as file transfer (ftp) or email addresses.

How can I get a domain?

Registration is instant, as long as the domain you choose is available. Registration is done through so-called registries, which are authorized registration service companies.

Are there different types of domains?

There are two types of domains:

  • gTLDs: generic top-level domains like “.com”, “.net”, “.org”, “.online”, “.book”
  • ccTLDs: country-specific top-level domains corresponding to a specific country or territory such as “.bg”, “.co”, “.es”, “.eu”

The choice of domain type depends on your strategy and where your business is based. If you would like us to check if the domain you have chosen is available and register it for you, write to us at office@ipfabrika.com.

How long are domains valid for?

Domains can be registered for a minimum of 1 year and be renewed as many times as you wish.

However, if you fail to renew your registration on time, your domain may be deactivated and even put up for auction. This allows third parties to bid on your domain, with the winner of the auction becoming the new owner of the domain.

Why is it important to have a domain?

If you want to offer your products or services online and make your business recognizable to consumers, you need a domain where customers can easily find your website. The domain can be descriptive of the services you offer (e.g. <books.com>) or contain your trademark (e.g. <ipfabrika-new.sfcbg.website/>).

What do you need to know about the relationship between domains and trademarks?

Although registering a domain name is quick and easy, a domain name cannot contain another's trademark. If this happens, the trademark owner can file a complaint, most often through the special administrative conflict resolution procedure of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO).
